During the holidays, I enjoy the time with my family and friends, but I’m already thinking about the new year. I remember something that I started doing back in 2010 that really helped me and I wanted to share it with you today.
But first a little back story.
If you’ve read my information on the about page or even if you know me personally you probably know that I graduated college with a Finance degree.
But you might not have known that I spent about 11 months waiting to begin working in my field.
After I graduated in May of 2010, I spent time looking for a career position and I kept coming up empty.
By December of 2010 I was so frustrated, I was ready to give up on finance altogether. But right around Christmas time I had a conversation with a co-worker where we talked about my goals and where I really wanted to be in my life.
She suggested I put together a budget program for young adults who needed help with money management.
I decided instead to start a blog so that I could reach more people. She also suggested I create a vision board and I started that night, putting together my board.
A vision board is a physical, tangible representation of your dreams and goals.
You may have a dream of owning your own business one day but unless you can visualize what that really means, you may never have that dream come to fruition.
In order to create a vision board you have to start visualizing your SMART goals.
What are SMART goals?
A goal that you really want to achieve should be SMART.
When you take your dreams and make them SMART goals and then visualize them, you will be surprised how quickly you achieve them.
Here’s an example.
One of my goals for 2015 is to grow my website. That’s a nice dream but it’s not yet a SMART goal.
So let’s make it one.
By December 2015 I want to grow my website traffic to an average of 10,000 visitors a month.
Specific: 10,000 visitors per month
Measurable: I can use Google Analytics to track this number
Attainable: I know others who have done it within 1 to 2 years
Relevant: Traffic is directly related to the growth of my website
Time Sensitive: By December 2015
Now do you see what happens?
My brain starts to break down this SMART goal into little pieces and I can create mini goals around this.
It also sets me into motion.
I know that writing great blog posts is directly related to my traffic growth, so I will continue to write my best for you guys so you will tell a friend.
In order to put this on a vision board, I could cut out a picture of a traffic sign and draw the number 10 thousand on it.
Anything that reminds my brain of this goal each time I see it would be a good edition to my vision board.
What are your goals for 2015? Are you creating a vision board with SMART goals?
